Residential Services

GMPI staff work to establish comfortable and nurturing homes for adults with a primary diagnosis of mental retardation, allowing residents to express themselves and develop additional skills for more independent living. We encourage individuals to help them understand that their rights and dignity need to be respected. Homes, apartments and condominiums are located throughout the Metro West area and are indistinguishable from a typical family home. These homes are staffed with people who assist adults with special needs to fully enjoy social and recreational experiences with a calendar of monthly activities, offering a wide array of choices.

Community Living Arrangement

Licensed by the Massachusetts Department of Mental Retardation as a Community Living Arrangement, GMPI operates three 24-hour supervised homes in the Marlboro community. We maintain clean, safe and personalized homes that blend well with other homes in the neighborhood. Individuals are encouraged to achieve goals, which they select, as well as participate in the community. Staff members assist individuals by providing structured and consistent training in the areas of daily living, including money management, food purchases and preparation, laundry, personal hygiene, use of public transportation and positive interaction with other people. Health monitoring and psychological services are also provided. We strive to provide training in those skills that will enable individuals to live in the least restricted setting. GMPI currently supports 34 adults in this type of living arrangement.

Supported Living Arrangement/Community Habitation

Placed by the Massachusetts Department of Mental Retardation, residents rent their own apartment by them selves or with a roommate of their choice. GMPI's Supported Living Services are designed for those individuals who are generally able to live independently, but require some assistance in order to do so. Residents receive less than 24 hour a day supervision. GMPI provides assistance in budgeting, menu planning, food purchases and preparation, connection to family and community leisure activities, assistance with health issues or other areas needing attention.

Many individuals living in supervised homes or with families develop the skills to be able to live on their own, and often those who develop such skills desire to live in their own apartment or house. The desire for ownership and independence is inborn, and is equally as strong in people with disabilities as it is in those without them. We recognize that these individuals still need assistance, but also that they must be given the opportunity to enhance their skills in order to live on their own. We currently serve three individuals living in their own apartments throughout the Metro West area. We work with each individual to increase their independence and to assist them in developing an active role in their community.
