Greater Marlboro Programs, Inc. (GMPI) began its existence with a decided emphasis on community living. A group of parents in the Marlborough area in the early 1970's had made the loving, but sometimes challenging decision to continue sharing their home with their son or daughter with a disability. At that time, many parents with children with special needs chose to send their children away to state institutions. This decision was made more difficult by the limited availability of supports in the community.
In 1973, when Greater Marlboro Programs was incorporated, one of the first programs it developed was Respite Care. This program provided families with trained assistance. Greater Marlboro Programs in collaboration with dedicated families and other community members developed a strong effort in this area. In 1976 the Commonwealth of Massachusetts developed a contractual relationship.
As with all proud organizations, Greater Marlboro Programs recalls its past fondly, but looks to the future with energy, commitment and concern. This constant reevaluation has resulted in the expansion of respite care to providing a range of family support options. Also, Greater Marlboro Programs offers an ever-widening range of integrative recreation opportunities, transportation options, individual and family supports and residential services.
